[월드투데이 김나혜 기자] 캘리포니아 해상 기름 유출 사고가 만들어낸 파장이 지속되고 있다.
The impacts created by the California offshore oil spill continue.

지난 3일(현지 시간) 석유 시추 시설의 파이프라인에 균열이 발생해 기름이 해상으로 유출됐다. 해당 지점은 캘리포니아 남부 해상인, 헌팅턴 비치에서 8킬로미터 떨어진 곳이다.
A crack occurred in the pipeline of the oil drilling facility, causing oil to leak into the sea. The point is eight kilometers from Huntington Beach, southern California, on October 3(local time).

사고로 인해 해안가로 기름 덩어리들이 떠내려왔다. 유출된 일부 원유는 회수되지 못하고 뉴포트 비치 등 더 남쪽으로 떠내려오기도 했다. 
Due to the accident, lumps of oil floated down the coast. Some of the leaked wasn't recovered and drifted further south, including Newport Beach.

잔여 복구 작업은 여전히 진행 중이다. 지난 7일에도 인부들이 해변에서 원유를 갈퀴로 긁어내는 작업을 계속했다. 오염 물질을 완전히 제거하려면 몇 달이 소요될 것으로 예상된다.
Remaining recovery work is still underway. On October 7th, workers continued to rake crude oil off the beach. It is expected to take months to completely remove the pollutants.

기름 유출 사고로 인해 서핑을 중심으로 하는 관광지인 캘리포니아 헌팅턴 비치는 인적이 끊겼다. 이번 사고로 해변이 폐쇄됐으며 수영 금지를 알리는 임시 푯말을 세워두기도 했다. 헌팅턴 비치 남쪽의 뉴포트 비치도 비슷한 실정이다.
Huntington Beach is a surfing-oriented tourist destination, but was deserted due to the oil spill. The accident closed the beach and set up a temporary sign to announce a ban on swimming. Newport Beach, south of Huntington Beach, is on a similar situation.

이 때문에 집단 소송이 제기되기도 했다. 지난 5일 헌팅턴 비치 인근 주민인 '피터 모지스 구티에레즈'는 사고로 피해를 본 사람과 사업체를 대표해 해당 석유 시추 업체 및 자회사를 상대로 소송을 냈다.
For this reason, a class action lawsuit has been filed. On October 5th, a resident near Huntington Beach filed a lawsuit against the oil drilling company and subsidiaries on behalf of those affected by the accident.

이번 사고는 생태계에도 엄청난 타격을 주었다. 원유 유출로 인해 죽은 새와 물고기들이 해변에서 발견되었다. 또한 유출된 기름이 인근의 조류 서식 습지까지 흘러들어가 우려가 더 커졌다. 헌팅턴 비치 시장은 사고를 '환경 재앙'이라 표현했다.
The accident also hit the ecosystem hard. Birds and fish that died from the oil spill were found on the beach. In addition, concerns have grown as the leaked oil flows into nearby bird habitats. Mayor of Huntington Beach described the accident as an "environmental disaster."

사고에 대해, 지난 6일 국회의원 'Mike Levin'은 남부 캘리포니아에서 모든 신규 해양 굴착을 금지하는 법안을 통과시킬 필요성을 주장하기도 했다.
In response to the accident, Congressman Mike Levin insisted on the need to pass his legislation banning all new offshore drilling activity in southern California on October 6th.

사고는 미국의 항만 대란을 심화시키는 데에도 영향을 미쳤다. 미 정부 및 관계자들이 이번 사고의 경제적, 환경적 손실을 하루빨리 극복할 필요가 있겠다. 나아가 이처럼 큰 피해를 일으킬 수 있는 사고를 사전에 방지하는 것도 중요하다.
Accidents also affected intensifying the port crisis in the United States. The U.S. government and officials need to overcome the economic and environmental losses of the accident as soon as possible. Furthermore, it is also important to prevent accidents that can cause such great damage in advance.
