[월드투데이 안신희 기자] 유럽에서 폭염으로 인해 가뭄과 산불 등 피해가 심화되고 있다.

In Europe, damage such as drought and forest fires caused by heat waves is intensifying.

이탈리아에서 가장 긴 강과 가장 큰 저수지의 일부가 70년 만에 찾아온 최악의 가뭄으로 인해 말라붙었다.

폭염이 알프스의 빙하를 위협하고 가뭄을 악화시키고 있다. 소방관들은 스페인과 포르투갈에서 산불과 싸웠다. 이베리아 반도의 주요 지역에서 섭씨 40도를 웃도는 고온의 공기가 수일 내로 북쪽과 동쪽으로 확산될 것으로 보인다.

Spain is breathing a sigh of relief as a sharp drop in temperatures is helping firefighters contain wildfires across the country that destroyed tens of thousands of acres of wooded land. But it’s still only June. Extended drought conditions in several Mediterranean countries, a heat wave last week that reached northern Germany and high fuel costs needed to operate firefighting aircraft have already heightened concerns across Europe this summer.

지난달 중부 유럽을 휩쓴 폭염으로 인해 그리스 남부 일부 지역의 기온이 40°C(104°F)에 도달했다. 높은 기온과 가뭄으로 인해 산불에 대한 우려가 커지고 있다.

스위스 연방정부는 당국이 앞으로 기온이 37도까지 오를 것으로 예상함에 따라 스위스 거의 모든 지역의 폭염 위험도를 4등급 중 3등급으로 높였다.
