[월드투데이 김나혜 기자] 에콰도르 과야킬 시의 리토랄 교도소에서 마약 밀매 갱단들 간의 권력 다툼으로 폭동이 발생해 수십 명의 사상자가 발생했다.
A riot broke out in a power struggle between drug trafficking gangs in Litoral penitentiary in  Guayaquil, Ecuador, resulting in dozens of casualties.

이는 지난 9월 같은 교도소에서 폭동으로 119명이 사망한 참사가 발생한지 불과 두 달 만에 벌어진 일이다. 또 이번 폭동에서는 최소 68명의 사망자, 25명의 부상자가 발생했다.
This happened just two months after the disaster in which 119 people were killed in a riot in the same prison in September. At least 68 people were killed and 25 injured in the recent riot.

재소자의 가족과 친척들이 폭동 발생 소식을 듣고 생사를 확인하기 위해 교도소 앞에 모이기도 했다. 이들은 담장 밖에서 가족의 소식을 기다렸다.
The inmate's family and relatives gathered in front of the prison to confirm the life or death after hearing the news of the riot. They waited outside the fence for the news of their family.

이번 폭동은 한 갱단의 재소자들이 또 다른 갱단을 공격하기 위해 폭발을 일으키고 흉기, 불타는 매트리스 등을 사용하며 수많은 사상자를 낳았다.
In the riot, a gang's inmates exploded dynamites, used weapons and burning mattresses to attack another gang and cause numerous casualties.

경찰이 투입된 뒤에야 폭동은 진정됐다. 경찰관들은 사태의 뒤처리를 위해 교도소 곳곳을 다니며 시신을 수습하는 등 작업을 했다.
The riot calmed down only after the police were deployed. Police officers traveled all over the prison to recover the bodies to deal with the situation.

에콰도르 교도소에서 갱단들 간의 이러한 충돌은 드문 일이 아니어서, 올해 이미 300여 명이 사망했다. 이는 에콰도르의 교정 체계가 제대로 작동하지 않는다는 사실을 방증한다.
Conflicts between gangs in Ecuadorian prisons are not uncommon, so more than 300 people have already died this year. This proves that Ecuador's prison system is not working properly.

에콰도르는 그 외의 치안 불안도 겪고 있다. 올해 10월까지 살인사건 1900건이 발생하는 상황은 경제난 등으로 인해 불안정한 에콰도르 사회를 여실히 드러낸다.
Ecuador is also experiencing other security instabilities. The situation in which 1,900 murders occurred by October this year clearly reveals an unstable Ecuadorian society due to causes such as economic difficulties.
